6- Madhuri Lake, Tawang:

If you’re an 80s kid, you’ll probably remember that godawful movie called Koyla, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, which released in the late 90s. On the one and only DD National channel then, you must remember watching tons of promotional clips and behind the scene videos of filming this movie somewhere in beautiful mountains. At that point, I didn’t bother much. I was frankly quite annoyed at Shah Rukh then for failing to follow up his dreamy (now totally bonkers) Raj act from DDLJ. . Years later I figure out that movie was shot in Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh. That a lake has been named after Madhuri who pranced around the mountain slopes and made the region famous. Apparently Koyla was the first Bollywood movie to be shot in Arunachal! It did bring in droves of tourists after some genius started selling the place as Madhuri Lake, but erasing the original name and angering the locals in the process. Many more years later, when I land up at that lake, couldn’t help but admire the dedication of the film crew to shoot in this remote corner two decades ago, when the journey here is resolutely back-breaking even today. . Now if we forget the movie for a minute, locally known as Shungatser, the lake was formed after a pastureland was flooded after an earthquake struck the region in 1971. Located very close to the Indo-China border, Indian army’s presence is ubiquitous along the entire route to this lake. I wish I knew more about this lake or the legends associated with it, but unfortunately the most anyone can tell me about this lake is that a Bollywood movie was shot here! (P.S – Linked to the movie song shot here in my stories, if you are curious that is) . #TheArunachalOdyssey
