Sikkim is truly called the “state of wonders”. There are many such places in Sikkim which deserves to be visited at least once and Mangan is one of them.

Few words on Mangan-

Mangan is a small beautiful town in the north Sikkim which is connected to Gangtok through a metalled road.  It is also official headquarters of the north-eastern part of the state and the largest district of Sikkim in terms of area.

How to reach Mangan-

You can choose a car rental at NJP (New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station) to reach Mangan directly which would take almost 5 hours. You can also arrive at Gangtok first by availing NJP to Gangtok by car and then travel further towards Mangan.

Places to visit in and around Mangan

1. Phodong Monastery-

Built by the Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal, Phodong Monastery is worth visiting while in Sikkim. Explore the mural embedded on the walls and the old paintings in the building and get an insight of the Sikkimese tradition and culture.

  • Major attraction-

On the 28th and 29th day of the 10th month of the Tibetan Calendar, “Chaam” which is an annual festival is celebrated.

2. Rong Lungten Lee-

Established in the year 2003, this is a heritage house which is a resemblance of the Lepcha house in Namprikdang. Artifacts of the Lepchas are stored and displayed here.

  • Major attraction-

According to the Lepcha people’s belief, their ancestors belonged to the Malay Lang which is a mythical country at the foothills of the Kanchenjunga Hills.

3. Singhik-

Situated 5200 ft above sea level, Singhik offers the best views of the Siniolchu Mountains and Kanchenjunga ranges. The snow-covered peaks; the gushing water of the Teesta River enhances the beauty of the already beautiful town.

  • Major attraction-

Signhik is considered to be the best view point in Sikkim which offers the best unobstructed views of the Mt Kanchenjunga and Mt Siniolchu.

4. Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary-

Situated in the Yumthang Valley, Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is a wonderful place to visit in Mangan. It is considered to be the paradise for nature lovers.

It has forty species of rhododendron trees. Apart from that, it has lots of rare species and birds and other rare animals.

5. Sirijonga Yuma Mangheem-

It is one of the most visited sites in Mangan. It was built in the year 1983 and brings out the cultural diversity of Sikkim.

People visit it during the month January to celebrate the Maghe Sankranti which is celebrated  Nepalese and Sikkim people.
